5. With a run time of 142 minutes War for the Planet of the Apes is by far the longest in the series. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) takes second place at 131 minutes, while a run time of only 88 minutes makes Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) the shortest.
4. At the end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes there is a suggestion that Koba (Toby Kebbell), the film’s villainous ape, may have survived his fiery death fall. Since the film’s release however, director Matt Reeves and writer Mark Bomback reconsidered bringing the character back for the third installment, deciding it was unrealistic and unnecessary. Of course Koba still makes several appearances in War for the Planet of the Apes, but only as a figment of Caesar’s imagination.
3. Unbelievably for a film requiring such a massive amount of CGI, War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves refused to pre-visualise much of the movie, enjoying the freedom to decide on shots while on location. This was partly made possible thanks to Lidar, technology which can scan an area and then create a virtual space. Speaking to Den of Geek he explained that ‘I get ideas for shots, but most of the shots happen when I'm on the set and I'm watching where they're standing, where they are in the space, and I'm reacting emotionally, in the moment. I like to react in the moment as much as I can’.
2. Titan Books published a prequel novel called War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations by Greg Keyes which shows the backstories motivating many of the characters. It makes Red (the donkey) appear less villainous in his thinking, Winter is seen struggling with his fears, and the Colonel’s relationship with his son is expanded upon. Jason Clarke’s Malcolm character from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also features.
1. According to IMDB in Italy War for the Planet of the Apes is titled The War: Planet of the Apes. The Germans are calling it Planet of the Apes: Survival. The Danish release has opted for Apes Planet: The Showdown. In Croatia, perhaps with an eye towards the betrayal in the film, it has been marketed as Monkey Planet: Rat. The Vietnamese seem to have focused on the revenge aspect and know it as When I See You.
