When astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his crew crash-land on a planet inhabited by upright walking, talking apes they must fight to survive. Along the way Taylor befriends a couple of chimpanzees (Zira, played by Kim Hunter, and Cornelius, played by Roddy McDowell) and a mute woman called Nova (Linda Harrison). As he flees from the ape overlords Taylor makes a discovery that shocks him to the core. |

5. Although not named in the film, the spaceship has often been known as Icarus by fans. The 2008 Blu-ray had a featurette in which it was named Liberty 1.
4. The studio spent $5000 on test footage starring James Brolin and Edward G Robinson as Dr. Zaius in order to see if the make-up would be practical for the film. Robinson later pulled-out of the part and was replaced by Maurice Evans. Brolin wasn’t in the film either.
3. A huge success, the film returned over 5 times its $5.8 million budget, grossing over $33 million world-wide.
2. John Chambers won an Academy Award for Outstanding Make-Up Achievement in the movie. The film was also nominated for 2 other awards, Best Music and Best Costume Design.
