​5. While set pieces were shot in Hungary, the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan provided the convincing red Mars backdrop, a location frequented by previous Mars-set films such as Red Planet (2000).

4. It managed to make back half its estimated $108 million budget on its domestic opening weekend.

3. The novel the film is based on was initially published by the author, Andy Weir, for free on his blog in 2011. He later made it available to buy on Kindle for the minimum price of $0.99.

2. A couple of days before the film’s premiere NASA announced that they had found evidence of flowing water on Mars.​

1. In Argentina and Chile the film is known as ‘Rescue Mission’, while in Brazil it was released as ‘Lost On Mars’. In France it has the title ‘Only On Mars’ while in Italy it is called ‘Survivor: The Martian’.
