5 Facts about 2015 Nicholas Hytner film The Lady In The Van starring Dame Maggie Smith

​Based on a true story. Playwright Alan Bennett allows a homeless woman to park her van / abode on his drive for three weeks, but she ends up staying for 15 years.​

​5. At the UK cinema the film made £2.26 million in its opening week, putting it on a par with Bennett’s former success The History Boys (2006) and making almost triple that of its contemporary release Steve Jobs.

4. With the exception of the late Richard Griffiths, the entire principal cast of Alan Bennett’s other successfully adapted-to-film stage play The History Boys make an appearance.

3. Based on a true story, the film was shot on location at the actual driveway where Miss Shepherd lived in her van between 1974 and 1989.

2. During production someone had broken into the van parked in Camden Town and had ‘a good time with each other’ which meant the crew had to clean all the van’s contents and then dirty them up again for the film.

1. In order to promote the film Dame Maggie Smith went on the Graham Norton Show, her first chat show appearance in 42 years.
