5. Although the Klingons had spoken alien dialogue before, it was with this film that language specialist Marc Okrand was hired to develop it seriously. Since then Okrand has published a Klingon dictionary and the language has become popular world-wide, with a handful of classics such as Hamlet being translated.
4. Playing the part of the Vulcan High Priestess was 87 year old Academy Award nominee Dame Judith Anderson. It was to be her final on-screen film appearance after a career that had begun with Madame of the Jury in 1930.
3. Mr Spock actor Leonard Nimoy made his feature-film directorial debut with ‘The Search For Spock’. A moderate success at the box-office, he went on to direct the next Star Trek movie and the highest grossing film of 1987, comedy hit ‘Three Men And A Baby’.
2. The film introduces us to 3 new types of starships - 2 Federation ships, the USS Excelsior and the USS Grissom, and the Klingon Bird of Prey. The Oberth class USS Grissom was named after late astronaut Gus Grissom, who died in a fire while preparing for a mission.
1. Both Merritt Butrick (David Marcus) and Robin Curtis (Saavik) went on to make guest appearances in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation as different characters. Sadly for Butrick it was to be one of his last roles, dying at the age of 29.
