5. As odd as it sounds, Kraft made a real working version of Spock's futuristic marshmallow dispenser commercially available.
4. Earning the largest opening weekend of all Star Trek films up to this point (just over $17 million), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was set to be a big earner for Paramount. However, eventually grossing less than $69 million world-wide would make it the franchise’s biggest flop until Star Trek: Nemesis.
3. The part of Sybok was played by relatively unknown actor Laurence Luckinbill, although the part had originally been conceived with Sean Connery in mind. Although Connery declined to be in the film, the Vulcan version of Eden, an obsession of the character in the film, was named Sha-Ka-Ree as a slight word play on the 007 actor’s name.
2. Uhura’s song ‘The Moon’s A Window To Heaven’ was written and performed by American Asian Jazz fusion band Hiroshima. Contrary to popular belief, Nichelle Nichols did NOT sing it herself and has vocalised her disappointed that she was not asked to do so.
1. Originally the William Shatner directed film featured rock monsters at the climax, but time and budget constraints meant they had to scrap the idea. One of these rock monsters was created, but was deemed too unconvincing for the finished film. Paramount have since released test footage of the creature, but denied Shatner an opportunity to make a director’s cut (as was done for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) of the film in which he might have presented us with his original ending.
