5. TREK AND THE CITY It has been reported that Valeris actress Kim Cattrall had a photographer shoot her on the set of the Enterprise bridge completely naked, save for a pair of Vulcan ears. Angered by the incident, apparently actor and producer Leonard Nimoy had the film destroyed, fearing it would damage Star Trek’s reputation if the photos were ever leaked.
4. BACK TO BASICS During the film’s development one script version by David Loughery was a prequel in which we see Kirk, Spock and McCoy meet for the first time at Starfleet Academy. Referring to it as ‘Top Gun in Space’, the idea was rejected by both the cast and studio, however the film’s themes would eventually be seen in the 2009 Star Trek film directed by J.J. Abrams.
3. UNDER THE SKIN Later Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor Rene Auberjonois played Colonel West, a significant part in the film which was cut from the theatrical release. His part was included in the home video and later DVD releases which slightly altered the climax of the film to include a Scooby-Doo type ending in which it is revealed his human character had tried assassinating the President while posing as a Klingon.
2. FINAL FRONTIER Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry died only 48 hours after seeing an unfinished cut of the film. He had been unhappy with what he saw and was demanding director Nicholas Meyer re-cut about a quarter of the movie. The two men parted after an argument, which Meyer later regretted.
1. SUPERSTAR TREK Casting director Mary Jo Slater got her son and leading film actor Christian Slater to make a cameo in the film. Apparently, instead of cashing his $750 cheque for saying one line, he had it framed and hung.
